Presented by: Althea Simpson, LCSW, LICSW, LCSW-C

Ms. Simpson is the owner of a trauma responsive psychotherapy practice in Northern Virginia. She has over 20 years’ mental health experience in the areas of research and direct clinical practice. She holds dual social work degrees in organizational leadership and clinical practice. As a registered play therapist-supervisor™, Ms. Simpson is an innovative training that brings effective creativity to mental health practice. As a certified LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ facilitator and expert trainer in the LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ methodology I regularly use this innovative methodology as a powerful tool that can be integrated with many psychotherapy frameworks to enhance the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals, families and groups receiving mental health services.

Workshop Description:

Collaboration is highly recognized as an important relationship variable in play therapy treatment that is most often lined to client treatment outcomes. Play therapy treatment will include many desirable as well as undesirable features, which is of critical importance to mental health professionals using play as a method of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Play therapy offers a therapeutic mode for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment interventions utilizing creative modalities to engage clients in the treatment process. Mental health professionals using play therapy must recognize the importance of one primary approach to engagement, which is therapeutic rapport building. Rapport building involves early personalization and the mental health professional being flexibly responsive to clients’ presenting nondiagnostic characteristics that are known to bear on treatment outcomes. Although traditional methods of play therapy are empirically effective for many psychological conditions, adjustments in intake, toy selection, and termination can greatly enhance the therapeutic process. The use of empirically derived play therapy strategies is of great importance for mental health professionals in assessing, cultivating, and responding to clients’ presenting and early treatment needs and beliefs.

A client’s story can be told using different therapeutic mediums. The LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ (LSP) methodology is a powerful tool that combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles that can be used as a creative and powerful play therapy approach. LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ uses metaphors and storytelling that is fluid and flexible in communicating, as demonstrated by the effectiveness of using narrative therapy in play therapy to reframe experiences. Utilizing LEGOŽ bricks in play therapy treatment make social interactions interesting to the client, using the naturalistic approach of play. The LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ methodology draws on extensive research from multiple fields including psychology and learning. It is based on the concept of “hand knowledge” and according to the research, our hands are connected to 70-80% of our brain cells. Therefore, incorporating LSP into play therapy treatment can help clients enhance communication and problem-solving skills by building LEGOŽ models to externalize thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Participants will explore the integration of the LEGOŽ SERIOUS PLAYŽ method with directive play therapy to treat clients across the lifespan with a variety of mental health challenges. Utilizing this integrative approach to play therapy can meet the therapeutic needs of many clients throughout the therapeutic process from rapport building to termination. LEGOŽ-based strategies can be used throughout play therapy treatment to help individuals, families and groups focus on their treatment goals. This is a “hands on bricks” interactive play therapy workshop from start to finish that may include experiential learning.
