The 3rd Annual

Wissa Lecture

to be held on the evening of November 7th.

This Wissa lecture series has been created in the honor of the late Dr. Anwar Wissa, the longtime President of Ardaman & Associates and an internationally recognized expert in geotechnical engineering.

The festivities will begin at 4:30 PM with a welcome reception for networking, viewing student posters and sponsor displays. The main event and dinner will begin at 6:30 PM.

This year's speaker is Les Bromwell, Sc.D., P.E., LIFE M. ASCE. Les is a Principal Engineer with AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, Inc., in Lakeland, Florida and will be presenting:

“LESSONS LEARNED FROM DAM INCIDENTS IN FLORIDA"

Florida, with its relatively flat topography, is not generally recognized as a dam-building state. It is a little known fact that there are more than 3000 miles of dams and levees within its boundaries.  Essentially all of these are earth structures, built from locally available soils, with control structures and outlet works of either reinforced concrete or steel. Although generally low in height, rarely over 100 feet, these facilities extend over a wide range of geologic conditions, creating unique design challenges, and leading to a surprising number of dam incidents. Incidents include both failures and other events that, without intervention, would likely have resulted in dam failure.

The presentation will present case studies of dam incidents in Florida, going back in time more than 100 years, and including the author’s 40+ years of experience.
