with Award-Winning Editor Alexandra O'Connell
You’re writing a book! But why should anyone (not related to you) read it? Does the book mean anything to other people? Would readers hate it, or—worse yet—get bored?
In her work as a book editor and writing coach, Alexandra O’Connell has seen more than her share of manuscripts that seem to have forgotten their reason for existence. They drag; they wander; they’re…boring. Sometimes even for their own authors.
Writers don’t write books like this on purpose. They happen. Because you forgot to think about readers that don’t live in your own head. Don’t let this book happen to you!
This workshop will cover:
* Audience
* Pacing
* Tension
* Goals, Obstacles, and StakesWe'll tackle issues like the Soporific Sidebar, Bombastic Backstory, and Dreary Dialogue, and why they’re killing your book’s momentum
This will be a hands-on workshop geared towards writers of fiction and memoir, though useful for any genre. You’ll diagnose your book’s stumbling blocks and leave with a hook to snag your ideal reader, as well as tools to make us care. Come with your work-in-progress or the book idea you’ve been meaning to test out, your ears, and whatever tools you prefer to use for writing. The workshop will give those so inclined the opportunity to receive feedback from the group.Time to get out of your own head, and ask: why should they care?
