Gather
A Benefit for the Media Institute for Social Change

We are excited to invite you to join us for our first annual benefit dinner and auction on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Cerulean Skies Winery in the Pearl District! We've got exciting auction items including seats for White Bird's Uncaged, tickets to Portland Winterhawks games, passes to the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, a private five-course Indo-Mexican fusion dinner + wine pairings for eight prepared by chef Kusuma Rao of Ruchikala, and SO MUCH MORE!!

Since 2006, the Media Institute for Social Change has been teaching public interest journalism and supporting independent and alternative media. We have successfully implemented a two-month summer program to teach college students how to produce professional-quality film documentaries. The program examines local solutions for global issues, and prepares students with creative and journalistic experience they can utilize to create change.

For the past three years, MISC has hosted a Student Sustainability Film Festival. Students from across the country produce films that highlight steps their community is taking toward a sustainable future.

These successes serve as a preface for MISC's next chapter: we're creating 100 short documentaries about Portland. That's right. Starting this October, the Media Institute for Social Change will begin producing a series of insightful films collectively called the Bridgetown News Hour. The goal of the News Hour is to create over 100 short documentaries about Portland - from its weirdos, to some of its amazing small businesses and organizations, to very important local social and civic issues that rarely get discussed in our mainstream media outlets. Think PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer meets Portlandia!

We're raising funds to match a grant from Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission to purchase all of the equipment necessary to produce these exciting documentaries-and to kick off its autumn production schedule. We are excited about the opportunity to create a media program and dozens of short documentaries that will help articulate what makes Portland so unique and to provide analysis about the region's social and civic issues.

Additionally, MISC is currently working with Cascade Educational Broadcasting Service to launch XRAY.FM, a locally grown, listener-sponsored radio station. We have secured a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Commission and obtained two low-powered FCC licenses to broadcast in the region.

This is an incredibly exciting time for MISC, and to complement this expansion in programming, MISC will begin hosting a monthly Media Salon in September 2013. Based on successful Eco-Salons hosted by MISC Executive Director Phil Busse, the Media Salons will invite media experts and practitioners to be guests in an informal Q&A session. These forums will act as a vehicle and space for discussion of contemporary media issues.

Please help support our wonderful programs such as the Student Summer Documentary Program and the Bridgetown News Hour and attend our auction fundraiser Gather: A Benefit for the Media Institute for Social Change on October 13th. Tickets are just $35We'll see you there!
