Sports Medicine Education Course 

 You are invited to attend a course bringing together members of the pediatric sport-related emergency care team, including Certified Athletic Trainers, EMTs, Paramedics, and sports medicine first responders. We will cover concussion management, exertional heat illness, spine injury management, sports equipment removal, triage of the "downed" athlete, and development of an Emergency Action Plan. We will also have a live hands-on simulation of youth sports emergencies and practice spine motion restriction and equipment removal. 

Dinner is included in the cost of registration.

3.0 CEUs will be offered for Athletic Trainers and Emergency Medical Service personnel.

6:00pm - Introduction

6:05pm - Current Guidelines for Spine Injury Management

6:30pm - How to Manage the "Downed" Athlete

6:50 pm - Current State of Concussion in Sports

7:10pm - Hydration and Exertional Heat Illness

8:00-9:30pm - Hands-on breakout sessions: Spine Injury Management, Concussion Recognition, and Equipment Removal

NYU Hospital Centers (BOC AP#: P2540) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Certified Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 3.0 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

For Emergency Medical Service personnel, this course is approved for 3.0 Hours NYC REMAC Alternative Source CME & 3.0 Hours NYS DOH CME. 

 

Educational Goals:

The Sports Medicine Education Course is designed to:

• Educate members of the Sports Medicine Team on current standards of care for sport-related spine injuries.

• Help members of the Sports Medicine Team identify and manage exertional heat illness.

• Discuss proper framework for an Emergency Action Plan and to identify potential barriers and solutions for implementation. 

• Review identification and management of concussions. 

 

Learning Objectives: 

 At the end of this event, participants will be able to:

• Discuss current best practices for spineboarding and demonstrate correct stabilization and equipment removal techniques.

• Discuss risk factors for exertional heat illness and recognize emergency situations as they arise.

• Develop a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan.

• Identify signs and symptoms of a concussion and appropriate management strategies.

Cancellation/refund policy:

In order to request a refund, you must email Izabela.Averyt@nyumc.org no later than 7 days prior to the day of the course. An administrative fee of $10 will be deducted from your refund. Cancellations or no-shows after this date are not eligible for a refund. If the course is cancelled due to inclement weather, insufficient enrollment, or any other reason, NYULMC will refund registration fees in full. NYULMC will provide at least two weeks’ advance notice if cancelling due to insufficient enrollment and as soon as possible in all other circumstances. NYULMC is not responsible for any airfare, hotel, or other non-cancellable costs incurred by the registrant.
