Introduction:
Many people ask “Why use wood? The answer is that wood, when responsibly harvested, is by far one of the greenest building products available. It is renewable, biodegradable, easy to recycle and produced primarily with rainwater and solar energy. Unlike concrete, steel and oil, (which is used in the manufacturing of nearly all synthetic products) it does not come from finite resources extracted from the ground that can never be returned to it. The carbon footprint of wood products is far lower than most other building products, in many cases it is either carbon neutral or carbon negative. This is because sustainable forestry can actually cause an increase in carbon absorption by forests, with more new trees growing in the place of the harvested trees. On the manufacturing side, the transformation of wood into flooring is significantly less carbon intensive than manufacturing carpet, vinyl or even stone. And the best reason of all is it is beautiful.
About the speakers:
Avi Atid, President and owner of Tulip has worked in the wood floor industry for 28 years developing an unparalleled expertise in all facets of wood flooring. He oversees all Tulip operations, installations, sourcing and heads our state of the art fabrication and finishing facility. He is artist, a master in customization, finish and color. He creates many of the special products Tulip Floors offers. Avi is an active member of the National Wood Flooring Association. Because of his extensive experience in creating, fabricating and installing numerous unique hardwood floors, Avi has an unerring knowledge of what to look for to identify and create quality floor products. His hobby is Japanese woodworking.
Heidi Headapohl, Vice president and co-owner of has been responsible for product sourcing, trend identification, design consultation and product selection at Tulip for the last ten years. She is a member of National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and recent Board Member of National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Heidi is a champion of green products and provides alternatives such as bamboo, cork, reclaimed and urban logged wood. She works extensively with the Design and Architect communities.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn the fundamental characteristics of wood flooring: species, formats, hardness, types of cuts, finishes, surface treatments and installation methods.
2. They will be able to describe the green aspects of using wood and alternative products such as cork and bamboo for flooring.
3. They will gain an enhanced ability to specify current wood floor products, finishes and surface treatments (available today) and become familiar with the best alternatives for green building with sustainable products and finishes.
4. Attendees understand the pros and cons of using different flooring formats and finishes.
5. Architects will see samples of many species, multiple finishes and available surface treatments.
