Intermediate Church

Video Production

July 8 - 11, 2014

Intermediate Church Video Production is a three-day course, led by Gary Arrington, for volunteers or paid staff in churches that are in the early stages of producting video media for use in their services. While students should already have some experience in the operation of their cameras and editing software, even new video producers will benefit. Participants will receive classroom instruction in lighting, capturing sound, shooting, set design, editing, and directing. Participants will be divided into several small groups based on the availability of equipment brought to the class and will, over the course of three days, produce at least one short video. Videos will be critiqued on the last day for proper lighting, audio, graphics, exposure/color balance/focus, and appropriate use of music.

Participants should plan on bringing as much of their own production and editing gear as possible. It's not necessary for everyone to have everything listed below, but they should bring as much as they have. Each group will need to have at least one of everything:

  • Digital video camera, batteries, charger
  • Laptop with editing software
  • Tripod
  • External microphones (preferably wireless lapel and shotgun)
  • Tapes (or digital media), cables, gaffer (or duct) tape

Gary Arrington is a graduate of Western Carolina University with a degree in Business. He spent more than 30 years in Human Resources at various companies. In 2008, he became the church administrator of a large Methodist church near Lake Junaluska and retired in 2012. He first became involved in video in 1981 when the company he was working for bought a video camera and asked him to tape various company events. When he and his wife joined Long's Chapel United Methodist Church in 2003, the church was looking for a volunteer to begin a video ministry. He shot his first church video with his own Hi-8 camcorder. He eventually became the volunteer team leader for the entire audio/visual ministry at the church. Gary has two children and two grandchildren. He and his wife, Jo Ann, live in Waynesville, NC.
