Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT)

Who’s invited? All therapists, clinicians, & students are welcome.                                                              Note: A Master’s degree in a clinical field is required for certification in the model.

Why? Here's a unique opportunity for clinicians to add Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Family Violence to your toolkit.

What is Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT)?

AF-CBT (Kolko, Brown et al., 2011) is an evidence-based treatment that works with families with high levels of conflict, including verbal aggression and harsh physical discipline. The goal of AF-CBT is to improve caregiver-child relationships, strengthen healthy parenting practices, and enhance children’s coping and communication skills.

Treatment is divided into three phases:

(1)    Engagement

(2)   Skill building

  a. For children: Affect Identification and Regulation, Trauma Narrative

b. For caregivers: Affect Regulation and Parent Training

(3)   Conjoint sessions to address family communication and discuss the family violence and learn family problem solving

Treatment is designed to reduce trauma-related mental health problems, including children's PTSD and externalizing behavior problems. AF-CBT promotes the use of positive coping skills, effective discipline strategies, and constructive family problem-solving and communication.

Training in AF-CBT includes: completion of the launch tasks, attendance at a 2-day learning session, participation in 12 consultation calls in which cases are presented and discussed, and recommended review of audiofiles of sessions for training and certification.

The fee per attendee ranges from $900-$1300.

Training will be led by

Dr. Elissa Brown, co-developer of AF-CBT, Executive Director of Child HELP Partnership and Professor of St. John’s University

&

Dr. Komal Sharma-Patel, AF-CBT Trainer and Assistant Director of Child HELP Partnership
