Fractions for All - July 26, 2019

Fractions for All

 July 26, 2019

8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

 Presenter:

Kricket McClure, Math Consultant

 Location

OVEC

100 Alpine Dr.

Shelbyville, KY 40065

Participants will deepen their own conceptual understanding of fractions and will learn strategies for doing the same with ALL their students, including students with disabilities.  Topics explored will include:

  • What is the whole? Why is that important?
  • What is a fraction?  What might it represent?
  • What are the various models for fractions?
  • What does equivalence mean in terms of fractions?
  • How might we compare / order fractions?
  • What is the relationship between fractions and decimals?
  • What are we actually doing when we add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions?
  • What are the learning progressions students go through in making sense of fractions?

As always, we will develop our understandings within the framework of the Standards for Math Practice, the Effective Math Teaching Practices, the CSA strategy, and a hands-on / minds-on approach to doing mathematics.

Audience – P-8 Teachers (General Ed, Special Ed [collaborative or resource])
