Are you seeking an evidence based approach for writing that not only addresses students’ difficulties with the writing process but also their attitudes, beliefs, and motivation about writing? With the SRSD approach, students are taught explicitly strategies for specific writing genres (e.g., narrative, opinion/argumentative, informational) including general writing strategies (e.g., utilizing strong word choice, creating interesting leads). In addition, students are provided explicit instruction in self-regulated strategies, such as goal setting, self-monitoring self-reinforcement, and self-instruction, to manage the writing strategies. SRSD instruction of the strategies takes place across six flexible and recursive stages to meet students’ needs. These stages are:
Stage 1: Develop and Activate Background Knowledge
Stage 2: Discuss It
Stage 3: Model It
Stage 4: Memorize It
Stage 5: Support It
Stage 6: Practice It
Session Outcomes:
Identify SRSD framework and instructional process
Apply new knowledge of SRSD
