Vicarious Trauma & Self-Care 

Nicky MacCallum LMFT, NCC in partnership with Gena Castro-Rodriguez PhD, San Francisco Mental Health Education Funds, Inc. and Psycho-Legal Associates, Inc. is presenting “Vicarious Trauma and Self-care.” This training is for those working with children, adolescents, young adults and families who are involved in mental health/health, child welfare, education, juvenile justice systems or other public services.  Continuing education credits (CEU) will be offered for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs, Psychologists, RNs, CAADAC, CRCs NRCs, MCLEs, and OTs.

Working with people who have been hurt, and feeling committed or responsible to help increases the risk of vicarious trauma.  While vicarious trauma is a normal and natural part of working with a traumatized population if not effectively managed it can be permanently transformative negatively impacting both quality of work and quality of life.  Participants in this training will have the opportunity to increase their understanding of vicarious trauma, participate in a self-assessment of their own vicarious trauma and learn practical, effective self-care tools to assist in coping with, transforming, and inoculating against the impact of vicarious trauma.


  • Define vicarious trauma and articulate why those working with a traumatized population are at greater risk for vicarious trauma
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with vicarious trauma
  • Identify cultural factors which impact vicarious trauma
  • Identify the potential impact of vicarious trauma on work performance and quality of life (Participants will complete an individual assessment)
  • Articulate the role of awareness, balance, community and connectedness in effective self-care
  • Create an effective, individualized plan for short-term/urgent self-care
  • Create an effective, individualized lifestyle plan for ongoing self-care


  • Conference fee: $30.00 ($40 after August 29th)
  • Conference plus 6 CEUs: $50.00 ($60 after August 29th)

Nicky MacCallum is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Nationally Certified Counselor and CAMFT Certified Clinical Supervisor and has been providing quality psychological services to children, adolescents, transition age youth and their families for more than twenty two years. In addition to working as an Independent contractor providing therapy, training, workshops and clinical supervision Ms. MacCallum is the Clinical Director of Youth Alive in Oakland, CA - Servingyouth recovering from violent injuries in order to promote positive alternatives to violence and to reduce retaliation, re-injury, and arrest. Ms. MacCallum is the Chair of the Therapist’s Working Group for the National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (NNHVIP) and was a Collaborative Investigator for the DSM-5 field trials contributing on Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders as well as Depressive Disorders. Ms. MacCallum has experience collaborating with child protective services, victims of crime services, family reunification, diversion programs, juvenile justice, community mental health, foster care, residential services, school based programs and hospital-based programs. Ms. MacCallum holds a bachelor’s degree (with honors) in performing arts from the University of London, Goldsmith’s College (UK) and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from San Francisco State University.

Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for:

LMFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs: Course meets the qualifications for up to 6 hours of continuing education credit for as required by the Board of Behavioral Sciences. CEs provided by SFMHEF, Inc. and Helynna Brooke (license number PCE5073).

Psychologists: Course meets the qualifications for up to 6 hours of continuing education credit provided by Psycho-Legal Associates, Inc. approved by the American Psychological Association to sponser continuing education for psychologists. Psycho-Legal Associates maintains responsibility for the programs.

MCLEs for Attorneys: Course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education creditis for attorneys. Legal Services for Children will provide the credits.

Nurses (RNs, PTs, LVNs, HHAs, CNAs): Psycho-Legal Associates, Inc. is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # CEP 11769. This live course provides six contact hours.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors: Psycho-Legal Associates, Inc. is approved by The California Foundation for Advancement of Addiction Professionals (CFAAP), Provider # 1N-96-338-0514, to provide six CEHs per day in Advanced Education for Certified Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADACs). CFAAP is the education board for the California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC).

Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRCs): This Psycho-Legal Associates course is eligible for approval on a post-attendance basis of six C.E. hours for CRCs certified by the The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification.

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs, NCCs): Psycho-Legal Associates, Inc. is approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) to provide continuing education to National Certified Counselors (Provider #: 5815)

Occupational Therapists (OTs): This Psycho-Legal Associates course provides six professional development units (PDUs) to OTs who determine that this specific course is related to his/her area of practice. As a reminder, OTs need to complete 24 PDUs of which 50% of the required number of PDUs must be directly related to the delivery of occupational therapy services, while the remaining units (up to 12) can be in other areas related to their practice.
