NGSS in the Classroom

In this two-day workshop, educators will explore what a Wisconsin Standards for Science (WSS)/Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) unit looks like in the classroom. This training will be facilitated by Kevin Anderson, Science Education Consultant, DPI.

Day One:
For the first day, we will experience initial portions of a free, middle school unit from the OpenSciEd* group and discuss its key elements:

  • working with phenomena
  • using driving question boards
  • building toward consensus models
  • creating coherence between lessons (storylines), along with the investigations themselves

Additional Resources for this training: Edweek Open Source Science Curriculum

*OpenSciEd is a group of national science education leaders creating 3D instructional materials. Their work will allow us to get a feel for what a full unit looks like in practice.

Day Two:
In the second day of this workshop, educators will continue to explore what a WSS/NGSS unit looks like in the classroom. We will:

  • move through the OpenSciEd unit
  • note the literacy connections and means to focus on equity
  • focus on student discourse and supporting productive talk
  • build on strategies of driving questions boards, modeling, and storylines
  • look at formative and summative assessment in this unit

We’ll have time throughout the day to collaboratively reflect on what this learning means for your classrooms.

Audience: K-12 teachers

Participants should bring a fully-charged electronic device to this training.

Note: Participants should have some background in WSS/NGSS
