Let's face it, sleep matters! Studies have shown that changes in sleep physiology and sleep deprivation have played an important role in perinatal psychiatric disorders. This conference will discuss the health consequences of sleep loss and review changes in sleep physiology during the perinatal period with a focus on postpartum depression (PPD). Participants will learn about the relationship between maternal depression and infant sleep, behavioral sleep treatment options for perinatal women with mood disorders and hear current advice regarding nighttime breastfeeding and PPD.
- Explain the importance of sleep in work performance and health
- Describe the relationship between sleep and mental health in perinatal women
- Recognize the role of sleep and circadian rhythm regulation as biological risk factors for disease
- Discuss recent findings on the impact of maternal depression on infant sleep
- Identify 3 treatment options for sleep disturbance during the perinatal period
- Specify current advice regarding nighttime breastfeeding and postpartum depression
