The Intersection of Education
and the Juvenile Court

with Marlies Spanjaard

Director of Education Advocacy
for the Youth Advocacy Division of the Committee for
Public Counsel Services, the public defender agency in Massachusetts

Workshop Description

In this pre-recorded workship, child advocates and families learn what they need to know about the juvenile court system in Massachusetts.

This workshop will provide you with an understanding of how the juvenile courts and schools intersect, particularly with CRAs, 51As and other actions schools may take on a student, and what special education advocates should know about these in order to most effectively advocate for students.

Answers to these questions and more will be covered in the workshop:
  • What does the juvenile court system in Massachusetts look like and how can we disrupt the School to Prison Pipeline?

  • What discipline actions are usually documented on a student’s transcript
    and college applications?

  • How to describe a CRA, 51A and how the affect students’ education and future and what advocates should know?

  • Why do schools file these and are they sometimes misused and how advocates should respond?

  • When do schools involve DCF with a student and what is at stake for the student, family? What are the options for advocates to respond for the best interest of the special education student and their future?

  • What is the School to Prison Pipeline? What discipline actions are usually documented on a student’s transcript and college applications?
