This lecture will highlight four types of analytic listening: objective, subjective, empathic, and intersubjective. Through lecture and discussion, Dr. Akhtar will expand upon the audience's understanding of patient syntax and countertransferential responses while utilizing these listening stances to delve further into and improve upon the understanding of patient narratives. Additionally, Dr. Akhtar will explore the importance of remaining inquisitive about the clinical relationship as a vehicle to deepen the abilities of the clinician to make meaning through the process of listening to and understanding each patient.
Through discussion of these analytic listening stances, Dr. Akhtar will address non-verbal communications, silence, cultural influences, and listening to self as techniques to advance the clinical relationship. Finally, these four approaches to analytic listening will be explored to understand the impact each method has upon the nature of intervention.
