Adding to your Tricks of the Trade!
The Kentucky School Public Relations Association Spring Retreat is a professional development opportunity open to any school public relations professional. The retreat is a casual atmosphere designed to promote networking among colleagues. The 2014 retreat focuses on improving the skills and knowledge schools PR professionals already have and features experts among our membership.
Thursday, March 20:
2 to 2:30 p.m. -- Registration
2:30 p.m. -- Welcome and introduction session
2:45 to 4 p.m. -- School Marketing 101: The basics of crafting an image/information plan
Brad Hughes, KSBA
This session will present a cost-effective (time and money) way to create a marketing plan for
your district, including audiences, tools, and messages.
4:15 to 5:30 p.m. -- Understanding U: Communcation from the Other's Point of View
Paul Schaumburg, Graves County Schools
This session will help school public relations professionals see the topics we cover and promote
from the perspectives of the media, co-workers, parents, taxpayers, and the community. By
making our messages as relevant and meaningful as possible to these publics, we can improve
our effectiveness and that of our school districts.
6:30 p.m. -- Dinner (as a group)
The group will travel to The Kentucky Bourbon House for a five-course dinner prepared just for
us. The restaurant is located in Chapeze House, a historic home named for the original owner
and occupant Gen. George Washington's personal physician. This unique treat will give
participants a little taste of Bardstown history and culture.
Friday, March 21:
Breakfast is provided by the hotel.
8:30 to 9:30 a.m. -- Writing is magical, but it's not magic
Tracy Harris, Oldham County Schools
This session will explore becoming more efficient and effective as a writer, but it is not a "how to
write a press release" session. Instead, it is more of a "how to write an effective press release in
30 minutes" session. Tracy Harris takes her decade of journalism and public relations training
and combines them to give specific strategies you can use everyday in your district.
9:45 to 11 a.m. -- KET Videographer
Kentucky Educational Television
This session will feature a videography specialist from KET who will deliver a presentation
focusing on in-house video production on a budget and creating video "on-the-fly."
11 a.m. -- Closing and checkout
We hope you will join us for this opportunity to sharpen your skills as a school public relations professional and network with others in your field.
