EXPERT SPEAKERS:

Mr. Ted McKechnie (past President/COO of Maple Leaf Foods, Inc.) 

Ted is a senior executive with extensive Board and Senior Management experience in the consumer goods, resource and service industries.  Ted has held positions in companies such as: Maple Leaf Foods, Inc.(President/COO), Humpty Dumpty Foods (President/COO/Owner), Kraft, General Foods, Frito Lay and PepsiCo.  In addition, Ted is a chairman of the board for Advanced Technology For Food Manufacturing and the Director of Lexaria Bioscience Corporation.  Ted is a well-recognized thought leader in the Canadian food industry.  After a distinguished career as an executive and marketer specializing in food manufacturing, he now focuses on moving the Canadian food sector into the future. 

Ted is often called upon by think tanks, the governemnt and industry leaders to offer insights on how to grow the food sector and add more value to the Canadian economy.

Andrea Budgell, (Controlled Substances and Cannabis Branch, Health Canada)

Andrea Budgell has worked in cannabis regulatory policy at Health Canada since 2015.  In 2016, she led the development of the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations, and since then, has been working to help implement the Government of Canada's commitment to legalize and regulate cannabis as part of the Controlled Substances and Cannabis Branch at Health Canada.  She is currently managing Health Canada's regulatory policy development on edibles and concentrates.  Andrea holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria and a Master of Arts from Western University.

Andrea Budgell will address: "Proposed Amendments to the Cannabis Regulations: Edible Cannabis, Cannabis Extracts and Cannabis Topicals."

 Aparna Gulavane,  (Quality & Regulatory Consultant, Cannabis Compliance Inc.)

Aparna is a graduate of Chemistry and Food Science & Technology, Six Sigma Green Belt, Preventive Control Qualified Individual and is a trained Auditor specialized in HACCP auditing and various GFSI benchmarked Quality Management Schemes.

Aparna's experience includes progressive responsibilities in the Quality, Food Safety and Regulatory fields.  She also has experience working closely with companies of all sizes to develop and implement their Quality Management Systems. 

Currently, Aparna is kept busy applying all her experience to understanding and interpreting the cannabis regulations to help companies with their licensing and compliance process.

Apoarna Gulavane will address: "Health Canada's Licensing System: Steps in the Licensing Process and the information/documentation required."

Dr. Keith Warriner,  Professor - Department of Food Science, University of Guelph 

Dr. Warriner received his BSc in Food Science from the University of Nottingham, UK and PhD in Microbial Physiology from the University  College of Wales Aberystwyth, UK.  He later went on to work on biosensors within the University of Manchester, UK and subsequently returned to the University of Nottingham to become a Research Fellow in Food Microbiology.  He joined the Faculty of the University of Guelph in 2002.

During the last 23 years in the field of microbiology and food safety research, Dr. Warriner has published more than 100 papers, book chapters, patents, and conference abstracts.  His research interests are focused on enhancing food safety within meat processing, fresh cut sectors and more recently, in the area of marijuana edibles.  To this end, his research team have advanced knowledge in the area of emerging pathogens (C. difficile, toxigenic E. coli), intervention technologies, bacteriophages and development of biosensor devices to detection of foodborne hazards.  He is frequently contacted by the media to provide commentary on food safety issues nad is currently the director of the OMAFRA HQP Program.

Dr. Warriner will address:  "Food Safety of Marijuana Edibles:  Will Regulations be a Safeguard of Drive the Industry Underground?"

Dr. Derick Rousseau, Professor - Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry and Biology, Ryerson University

Well-known and respected by his friends and colleagues at CIFST, Dr. Rousseau has been a Professor of food science at Ryerson University in Toronto since 1998.  He has a BSc from Laval University and PhD from the University of Guelph on lipid crystallization.  To date, Dr. Rousseau has contributed over 160 publications, 250 presentations and 3 patents. 

Research: formation and stability of food colloidal systems (fats, emulsions, gels and confectionary) and how to improve functionality.   Dr. Rousseau is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal: Food Structure. 

Dr. Rousseau will address: "Incorporating cannabinoids into processed foods - the scientific perspective.
