Lactation Lab with Maya Bolman:

Mammary Massage & More!

Featuring Maya Bolman, RN, BA, BSN, IBCLC

Description

On April 19, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM PST, BreastfeedLA presents Lactation Lab with Maya Bolman: Mammary Massage & More!, a hybrid event featuring Maya Bolman, RN, BA, BSN, IBCLC. During this session, Ms. Bolman will introduce clinical skills such as Therapeutic Breast Massage, Hand Expression, Breast Gymnastics, Reverse Pressure Softening and Soft Stretching Techniques that are essential for every lactation consultant, as well as other healthcare professionals. Teaching these manual techniques to parents will support and empower them to deal with the pain and discomfort of engorgement, plugged ducts and mastitis. They will also be useful in managing oversupply or working on increasing milk production.

Due to the hands-on practice with live, lactating clients at this event, the in-person portion is ONLY for those whose scope of practice allows them to provide hands-on clinical lactation support, such as clinical students, CLCs, IBCLCs, and Licensed Health Care Providers

Tickets for this live event will be offered for both in-person or virtual attendance! Due to limited capacity, only 60 in-person tickets are available!  Update: in-person tickets are SOLD OUT, but virtual attendance is still available!

The in-person event will take place at the Donahue Center, on the campus of Mount Saint Mary's University, at 10 Chester Place, Los Angeles, CA 90007. Refunds will not be given if you are unable to attend in-person; however, you will still have the option to join us virtually.

If you have been ill within the last 5 days, we respectfully ask you to attend virtually. Masks are strongly encouraged. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test in the last 24 hours are required to enter.

You can also register for the recorded version that will be offered within two weeks after the in-person event. This recording will only be available for THREE MONTHS after the event.

Participants will be awarded 4.25 L-CERPS & 5 Contact Hours.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Review the birth and lactation practices used by different cultures to help resolving acute breast pain. Identify traditional postpartum support networks in diverse cultures.
  • Discuss current research findings on the role of manual techniques in managing maternal acute breast pain (e.g., engorgement, plugged ducts and mastitis) as well as managing milk supply (low or over).
  • Discuss conditions associated with breast swelling and inflammation such as engorgement, plugged ducts, mastitis and oversupply.
  • Learn how hand expression can help to increase milk production
  • Demonstrate manual techniques for treatment of plugged ducts, mastitis and oversupply.
  • Explain how to teach these techniques to breast/chest feeding parents.

Speaker

Maya Bolman was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus. She was certified as IBCLC in 2001 and currently works as a lactation consultant at Senders Pediatrics and Breastfeeding Medicine of Northeast Ohio. She has over 25 years of experience as a nurse, doula and lactation consultant.

Maya is well known internationally for her work promoting hand expression and breast massage to health professionals and parents. Breast pain is one of the major causes of weaning. The likelihood of weaning increases the longer pain persists. Engorgement, plugged ducts, and mastitis are commonly associated with acute breast pain. Simple gentle manual techniques can help treat acute breast pain in breastfeeding parents.

Maya recognizes that teaching parents these techniques will empower them to work through breastfeeding challenges including engorgement, plugged ducts, separation from the infant, and milk supply concerns.

She has worked with Dr. Ann Witt to create an instructional video “The Basics of Breast Massage and Hand Expression” and conducted research on the effectiveness of Therapeutic Breast Massage in Lactation (TBML) both in the office and as a treatment at home for mothers.

Maya Bolman is the proud owner of “BreastKindness” LLC which is dedicated to empowering parents and consultants through education; supporting their goals; teaching simple and effective techniques.
