Description
Predictability and long-term success of direct posterior composite restorations continue to be a primary concern for many practitioners due to the technique-sensitive protocol required for proper placement.  New advancements in direct resins and photo-polymerization technology now enable dentists to simplify these procedures without compromising quality.  However, staying abreast of the capabilities and differences among new materials—as well as their preparation, placement, and polymerization requirements—is essential for predictable efficacy, esthetics, and long-term function. 

This content and workshop presentation is essential for young dentists, particularly because ongoing changes in material composition, adhesive mechanism, application method, and overall adhesive techniques have increased the variety of esthetic direct restorative materials available for use in clinical practice.  This course fills the void between current dental school curricula requirements and present-day realities by addressing available materials, their respective techniques, and proper use for ideal clinical outcomes.

Dentists currently in practice must acquire new knowledge and skills to achieve the continuously high level of esthetic, functional, and minimally invasive care that today’s patients demand.  Simultaneously, they face the need to increase chairside productivity, improve clinical effectiveness, and realize greater efficiency to achieve practice profitability.  When presented to currently practicing dentists as part of a continuing education program, this course demonstrates how these procedures are completed with greater efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness.

Today’s dental patient arrives at our office expecting that any dentistry completed will be esthetic and natural in appearance. Critical to the success of any esthetic dental treatment is the appropriate selection of the proper restorative material.  Selection of the best restorative material not only involves the potential for optimal optical properties but also requires an analysis of biologic and functional criteria.

This lecture will illustrate how the dentist-laboratory technician restorative team of the 21^st century will utilize the newest materials and techniques to create dental restorations of the highest order. In a world where information is expanding at an exponential rate, it is critically important for the restorative team to have a decision tree at their disposal for choosing the best material for a given situation

Objectives
Akin to Dr. Sesemann’s numerous published manuscripts on the techniques necessary for successful completion of restorative cases, this workshop course focuses on the proper adhesive protocols, requisite form, and ideal function when placing direct posterior composite restorations.  In particular, learning objectives for this course include:

• Understanding proper adhesive protocol and application techniques
• Recognizing the spectrum of indications for new bulk-fill resin composite materials
• Appreciating proper isolation, preparation, and placement techniques to achieve optimum contacts and anatomy
• Identifying various defining objectives that determine the best indirect material to use in various restorative situations

Michael R. Sesemann, D.D. S.
Dr. Michael Sesemann received his dental degree in 1981 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry.  He has been in private practice since that time and maintains active memberships in the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Equilibration Society, the American Society for Dental Esthetics and the Academy of General Dentistry (Fellow). 

After becoming an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) in 1999, he became the 35^th Fellow of the Academy in 2004.  He currently serves as an examiner for the accreditation and fellowship processes after serving as Chair of Accreditation for the AACD in 2001-04.  In addition to his credentialing duties, numerous committee responsibilities and Director activities, Dr. Sesemann was elected to be the Academy’s 23^rd President serving the organization in 2009-2010.

While maintaining a full-time practice in Omaha, Dr. Sesemann lectures internationally and has published several manuscripts on the techniques necessary for successful completion of the comprehensive restorative case.  He enjoys being Adjunct Faculty for the Kois Center and the Beverly Hills Institute of Dental Esthetics after serving at the Dawson Center in a similar capacity from 2004-07. Dr. Sesemann also appreciates giving back to future dentists by being an adjunct faculty member for the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. 

For written publications, Dr. Sesemann served as Associate Editor for Functional Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry.  Currently, he serves as Section Editor (Restorative) for the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry and sits on the editorial boards of Inside Dentistry, Practical Procedures and Aesthetic Dentistry, and the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry.

As founder of the Nebraska Institute of Comprehensive Dentistry, Dr. Sesemann strives to achieve a predictable synergy between esthetics and function.  The result for the patient is excellent oral health, an attractive smile and long-term, functional satisfaction.
