Night Photography

with Jim Hamel

Jim will show you everything you need to know to capture dramatic photos at night.  Not only that, but you'll get hands-on experience creating your own night photos.

We'll start with an explanation of how you can create stunning night photographs, including:

  • What you need for night photography
  • Mastering exposure of night shots
  • How to process your night photos
  • How to photograph the night sky, including the Milky Way
  • Start to finish examples

After establishing a firm understanding of the process, we'll head out to a selected location so you can capture your own night shots.  Anyway, once you have the shot(s) you want, we will regroup and edit the photos, with Jim offering assistance so that you can create your own work of art.

Suggested Equipment List

You don't need much to shoot at night.  Here is everything you should be sure to have with you:

  • Your camera and your favorite lens(es) - I personally use wide angle most of the time for night shots, so I recommend you bring one of those.
  • Tripod - any will do as long as it is stable and you can carry it around.
  • Remote shutter release - this is to avoid moving the camera, but don't worry if you don't have one.  You can pick one up pretty cheap, or you can just use your camera's timer to take the picture.
  • Laptop - loaded with your post processing software of choice (I will be using Lightroom and Photoshop)

Bring a flashlight if you have one.  Also, make sure your batteries are fully charged, as long exposures use them up fast!

Jim Hamel

Jim is a photographer focusing on landscapes, seascapes, and urban scenes.  When job and family life left him with little time to shoot during the day, he began focusing his efforts on night photography.  He spent several years photographing at night in various locations across the US and Europe, both in urban and rural settings.  In recent years, he has taught and lectured about night photography across the country.  He also created a popular course on Night Photography for Digital Photography School, the world's largest photography website.

Jim resides in Southlake, Texas with his wife Susan and two daughters Hannah and Elizabeth.  In addition to working to further his own photography, he maintains a website to help photographers called Outdoor Photo Academy.  He is a staff writer for Digital Photography School.  His books include Getting Started with Photography and Photographing London.  He is also teaching an upcoming course on scenic photography at the Winona School of Professional Photography.
