ALISON PALMER
APRIL 21 - 23, 2017
Participants in this three-day hands-on workshop will explore the making of animal (or human if you wish) ceramic pots using slabs and paper patterns. We will work on a variety of forms such as serving bowls, pouring vessels, and lidded containers. Over the three days there will be demonstrations on ways to bring your zoomorphic pots to life. We will start each day by preparing slabs and working on our patterns. The afternoon will be for assembling and refining the work. On Sunday I will go over some decorating techniques. Time permitting I’ll have a presentation of my own work and inspirations. Bring a good pair of scissors along with your tools.
DAY 1 - FRIDAY, April 21st
The first day will be spent primarily designing our work and thinking about the different ways we can make our forms into utilitarian pottery. We'll prepare the slabs, work on patterns for the animal forms. Through out the day we will be talking and experimenting with different possibilities for making representational animal forms. If you choose you can also make a maquette of clay in order to help you visualize your piece.
12:00 - 1:00PM - LUNCH
5:00-5:30 Powerpoint presentation
DAY 2 - SATURDAY, April 22nd
In the morning we’ll start assembling our pieces with the prepared slabs and patterns. Alison will talk about securing the joints and adding on body parts without cracking. We will work on coaxing the clay to represent ribs shoulders and hips. We will work on setting up structures to get the intended heights on legs without there being any sagging. We will talk about adding spouts, handles, and knobs. Decorating techniques will be introduced at this point.
12:00 - 1:00PM - LUNCH
After lunch we’ll add all of the parts such as legs, necks, heads, and tails/handles.
DAY 3 - SUNDAY, April 23rd
Sunday will be the day to refine all of our pieces by adding eyes, wrinkles, toenails, fur and other details. Alison will show a variety techniques to decorate with slips. She will show some carving techniques and decorating using slips and stencils.
