Suicide Prevention Training primarily focuses on the non-clinical role of preventing suicide in health care and recovery center settings, providing real-time suicide prevention methods and an overview of national best-practice prevention models, including Signs of Suicide (SOS), Zero Suicide, Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) training and National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Connect/Recognize. Participants will discuss the role of the recovery coach versus that of clinician when it comes to suicide prevention, learn crisis response protocols and how to navigate a discussion around suicide and post-intervention support.

Training Goals & Objectives:

  • Understand suicide, prevalence nationally and worldwide, and ambivalence
  • Understand risk and protective factors, safe messaging, and how substance use and mental health relate to suicide
  • Learn how to intervene with individuals at-risk, connect them to appropriate resources, and best-practices for restricting access to lethal means
  • Explain prevention and intervention education and resources, including Zero Suicide approach, Signs of Suicide (SOS), NAMI Connect, Recognize, and Counseling Against Legal Means (CALM)
