"Medical Histories and Medical Emergencies: Vital Signs for the Dental Team" (3 CEU's)
Presented by Cindy Kleiman, RDH, BS

The population is aging, bringing older and more medically complex patients to the dental office. The chances of encountering a serious medical emergency are greatly increased.  The average general dental practice that doesn't offer advanced sedation services is often underprepared to respond to an unexpected medical emergency.  Every member of the dental team must be fully versed in all procedures and the use of emergency equipment. While having basic knowledge is important, motivating the team to be confidently prepared is the key. This course is designed to empower the general practice members to incorporate a medical emergency Action Plan into their standard of care.  Prevention and treatment of emergencies will be covered, with emphasis on team synergy.  This course is excellent for all members of the dental team. This interactive program offers an upbeat and often humorous approach to a serious topic.  It offers many pearls and practical hints that will be put to use the very next day. *Please bring in a photo or list of your own emergency medical drugs and equipment.

Saturday, August 22, 2015

7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Registration

8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. - Breakfast Keynote
"Medical Marijuana" (1 CEU)
Presented by Heather Rogers, BSDH

Have you thought about how medical and recreational marijuana use may impact you as a practitioner? This course will discuss your possible liabilities in the treatment of patients using this drug.  With states legalizing marijuana, it will be challenging to address just how to safely provide dentistry to our patients.  We'll discuss how to make common sense decisions on a topic that may prove to be very challenging in the future.

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  - Speaker Session
"The Older Adult: The New Face of Addiction" (3 CEU's)
Presented by Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, RDH, Ph.D.

This course will examine the widespread problem of substance abuse and addiction among older adults.  Elderly adults present with higher risks for cancer, infections and infectious diseases due to past and continued use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.  The number of adults aged 50 and older with substance abuse disorders is expected to double by 2020 across gender, ethnicity and all age groups.  Treatment admissions for substance abuse in this same group have more than doubled since 1992, with estimates continuing to grow as Baby Boomers age.  A growing body of research supports that older adults currently engage in recreational drug use, and lifetime use of a variety of substances has increased significantly among Baby Boomers.  Dependency on prescription drugs is widespread with a multifactorial etiology.  Normal physiologic changes in aging alter drug handling in the body, contributing to increased side effects, toxicities and overdose.  Strategies for how to safely manage these patients in the dental setting will be discussed.

12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. - ASDHA President's Luncheon with Board of Directors' Meeting

2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. - Speaker Session
"The DiGangi Code - Teledentistry - Reimbursement What You Need to Know" - (2 CEU's)
Presented by Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS

Teledentistry has the potential to reduce costs, improve quality, change the conditions of practice, and facilitate access to oral health care in rural and other underserved areas. Recent legislation opens new ground for Arizona dental hygienists as well as many questions about benefit coding and more. Using the most accurate CDT (Current Dental Terminology) codes is required whether filing for benefits or basic record keeping. The existence of code does not mean a patient has coverage yet without a code, no coverage could be offered. This course will help develop critical thinking needed to choose the most accurate benefit codes for teledentistry and everyday care.

As part of the course, each participant will receive the book DentalCodeology: More Than Just Pocket Change ($19.95 value) compliments of Xlear, Inc..
