Course Description:

The helping profession entails a great deal of stress and the work conducted may lead to negative experiences for professionals across life domains.  These challenges can affect both the professional and the organizational culture, impacting the well-being and effectiveness of employees and the larger system. This workshop will explore the impact of stress on professionals, potential consequences of exposure to trauma in the workplace, such as compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout, and the importance of workplace resilience in addressing these challenges. Supervision and structured self-care are critical components in developing resilience to address workplace stressors and dynamics, and this workshop will also consider supervision techniques that support strengths and lead to positive solutions, as well as structured self-care plans. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the potential impact of workplace stress on helping professionals, to include by not limited to, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout.
2. Define and identify signs of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout.
3. Assess for personal experiences of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout.
4. Explain the importance of addressing workplace stress to develop and enhance workplace resilience.
5. Acknowledge the importance of supervision in addressing workplace stressors and supporting workplace resilience.
6. Apply techniques utilized in a vicarious trauma action plan as resources for developing and enhancing workplace resilience.

Speaker Information:

Letha is a licensed social worker with professional experience in clinical and higher education settings.  She speciailizes in trauma-informed care and services, and has experience providing individuals and familieis with trauma-focused therapeutic treatment.  In addition, Letha teaches graduate social work students and she facilitates educational workshops and presentations on trauma-informed practices across organizational settings. 

Letha holds certifications in various trauma treatment programs and modalities, and her primary areas of interest relate to traumatic experiences of children, adults, and families; traumatic stress and its effects on neurodevelopment and well-being across the lifespace; and treatment of trauma survivors. She has been a clinician in various community behavioral health settings, as well as a program manager for secal years in an intensive outpatient program. Letha currently provides trauma-informed care to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. 

Letha has also taught courses to social work students for several years, and has been a faculty member with Salisbury University's Social Work programs since 2008.  She participates in community outreach through her volunteer work with local public schools, trauma initiatives and committees, and the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners, of which she has been a Board member since 2016.

National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Credits - 5.5 hours

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program, and 30 minutes after the start of the program.  Attendees are expected to stay until the conclusion of the day in order to receive credits for the day.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

Registration will close at the end of the day on June 12th; however, we do accept onsite registration as long as space allows.  

Registration includes coffee, juices, and light breakfast snacks starting at 8:30am with registration.  Lunch will be provided by the venue and is included with your registration. 

If you are registering as a VA VISN 5 Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID Badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program unless you pay the regular community rate.
