Course Description:

The Federal HIPAA Regulations mandate that employers provide staff training upon hire, and whenever the regulations are updated. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, new HIPAA guidelines and forms have evolved, and several have been updated. Tele-dentistry has now become commonplace in the dental practice which has led to updates in applications, platforms, financial reimbursement, and forms, all of which will be reviewed during this program. Additionally, while the pandemic continues, the Office of Civil Rights has issued some exemptions for HIPAA violations applicable to utilizing new Tele-dentistry technology; these will be discussed. The ADA states that it is the ‘primary responsibility of the dentist to safeguard the patient’s privacy and maintain the confidentiality of patients’ records.’ ADA cautions that a practice, if audited, may only have between 10-14 days to respond to the requested information for items such as security risk assessments, policies and procedures, training records, and business associate agreements. It is vital to be prepared for these challenges and stay current with HIPAA. This program discusses these topics and reviews the evolving Privacy and Security regulations. Numerous sample HIPAA documents will be provided. This program meets the requirements for the ADA HIPAA credits for licensure renewal.

Learning Objectives:

1. Review the evolution of HIPAA regulations.
2. Identify how to: produce a training for new employees on the office HIPAA policies and procedures; create a review for current staff as laws change; and best document training.
3. Review sample HIPAA documents for: Staff training, Sanctions for Non-Compliance, Compliant, Notice of Privacy Policy, Acknowledgement of Receipt, Access to Records, Risk Assessment, and several others.
4. Discuss how to create new HIPAA protocols, document these policies, and incorporate them into dental practice.
