Driving Directions

Learn how communities are working together to achieve health and social justice with keynote speaker Dr. Tony Iton.  As the former head of the Alameda County Public Health Department in Oakland, Dr. Iton established its Social & Health Equity Initiative which addresses the effects of systemic injustices on the health of undeserved communities and promotes community empowerment strategies to eliminate health inequities. As the new Senior Vice President for the Center for Healthy Communities at the California Endowment, Dr. Iton is directing a 10-year initiative to build leadership and capacity within the nonprofit health sector to mobilize communities for social change.  Following his presentation will be a discussion moderated by Dr. Brian Smedley, Vice President and Director of the Health Policy Institute (HPI) at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.  HPI’s mission is to ignite a Fair Health movement that gives people of color the inalienable right to equal opportunity for healthy lives.
