Overall Goal:  Work collaboratively to establish and sustain safe environments for all that promotes compassion, respect and recovery.

 Objectives:

• Identify best and promising safety practices and strategies for implementation
• Describe the characteristics of compassion fatigue and identify two ways to support staff in caring for themselves and others
• Identify two or more key principles in establishing and sustaining safe service delivery and community living environments for all

Target Audience:
Direct Care Workers, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, DMH Staff and Leadership and other interested stakeholders

Workshop 1 - Caring for Staff following an Event
Description:  Panelists will share best practices for responding to staff following an event when someone has been injured or traumatized by an incident of violence.
Objectives:
·       Describe the protocols, staffing and training needed to implement the best practices described in this                  workshop
·       Describe two unique characteristics of a peer-to-peer volunteer response protocol
·       Identify one or more benefits of instituting a formal response to events of violence

Description:  This workshop will discuss fundamentals of risk assessment and mitigation in a recovery oriented environment.

·       Identify risk assessment and mitigation methods that support  a recovery environment
·       Describe risk assessment and mitigation techniques that sustain safe environments for all

Workshop 3 – Addiction, Risk and Safety
Description:  This workshop will discuss the neuro biology of substance abuse, its effect on behavior and its root in risky and dangerous actions.  Participants will explore the many ways in which substance abuse can contribute to these actions and the implications for staff and person’s served
Objectives:
·       Describe the effects of substance abuse on the brain and a person’s behavior
·       Identify 2 ways in which substance abuse can contribute to risky and dangerous actions

Workshop 4 - Best Practices in Safety
Description:  This workshop will give an overview of an agency’s workplace violence prevention program, as well as safety practices from different perspectives in the workforce and everyday interventions for keeping staff and people we serve safe
Objectives:
·       Identify 2 new and evolving methods of safety practices.
·       Identify at least 2 interventions for keeping staff and people we serve safe on a daily basis in a variety of
        practice settings
