POST COVID Practice: A new Take on Business Development

 

The virtual presentation addresses complex business development challenges relating to the current requirements of COVID-19.  The selected interdisciplinary panel will evaluate business development strategies to identify how this area of our industry will evolve, as we continue to focus on health and safety in the workplace.

Jill Van Auken, Owner Van Auken Akins, AIA


  • Jill Van Auken AIA is the Principal and majority owner of Van Auken Akins Architects LLC, an award-winning architecture, interior design, and construction management firm located in Cleveland, Ohio. With over 35 years of professional experience, Jill has facilitated projects in nearly every sector. Jill was recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners as a Top Ten Business Owner, is a member of Smart Business’ Smart 50 Class of 2019, and was recently regarded as one of Greater Cleveland’s Most Influential Women by Cleveland.com.
  •  Jill is a former Treasurer of American Institute of Architects Cleveland and is a current member of the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s Air Service Demand Task Force and Cuyahoga County Harvest For Hunger Campaign Cabinet.

 

Arne Goldman, Director of Business Development at Marous Brothers, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP


  • Mr. Goldman is a registered architect who brings over 40 years of construction experience in the planning, design and management of construction projects to Marous Brothers Construction.  In his role as Director of Business Development, he is responsible for identifying, creating and pursuing new business opportunities for the company using a relationship-based sales model.  Additionaly, Mr. Goldman serves as the “Development Quarterback” for many clients, and is responsible for guiding the efforts of the Project Team through financial, geopolitical and constructability challenges to a successful contract closing.  He often works with clients to structure and secure various financing vehicles, including historic and low income housing investment tax credit equity, New Markets Tax Credits, bond issues, TIF’s, interim public and local foundation financing, as well as HUD and other primary mortgage programs and/or FHA-backed mortgage structures.

  •  Mr. Goldman attended Cornell University, where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1981, and became registered as an Architect in 1984.  He holds a national certification from NCARB, and maintains professional registrations in numerous states.  During his career, he has worked for architectural firms, developers, and construction companies in New England and Ohio, giving him a unique perspective and understanding of the principles of best practices in development, design and construction.  As a LEED Accredited Professional, he integrates this expertise in working with clients to employ sustainable design practices wherever possible.  He also offers freelance architectural services to residential and commercial clients, and serves as an expert witness for several prominent law firms on various legal matters concerning projects in litigation.
  •  His professional affiliations and memberships include the American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, Society for Marketing Professional Services, Greater Cleveland Partnership, City Club of Cleveland, National Historic Preservation Trust, Kiwanis International, and the United States Green Building Council.  Additionally, Mr. Goldman holds Board positions with AIA Cleveland, LAND Studio, and the Cleveland Restoration Society.

 

 Johnathan Moody, CEO Moody Nolan, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, LEED AP 


  • Driven by a passion to continue his father’s legacy, Jonathan D. Moody has entrenched himself in firm leadership driving growth and innovation. Moody Nolan has grown to over 230 employees and 12 offices across the nation. The firm’s designs have now won over 300 design citations including 46 from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and 43 the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Jonathan has helped continue and extend the firm’s position as the largest African-American owned architecture firm. Moody Nolan continues to garner national attention by promoting “diversity by design.”
  •  Jonathan has more than 12 years of high-end design experience focused on integrating digital fabrication and social engagement into the design process. He approaches design with an overall goal of having a major positive impact on communities in need. For Jonathan, architecture is a medium through which people can be connected and inspired by giving tangible being into ideas. Over the last several years, he has passionately devoted himself to community service through mentoring and education programs focused on empowering underserved youth.
  • A former designer for the Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design and Eisenman Architects, Jonathan’s background is focused in 3D visual presentation and digital fabrication. Most recently, he has worked on a variety of civic, sports, education, healthcare, and institutional projects. While working on projects, Jonathan is also deeply engaged in strategic implementation of Moody Nolan’s long term aspirations.

Brian Williams, VP of Architectural Sales at Thomas Brick


  • Brian Williams joined Thomas Brick as a third generation brick salesperson back in 2003, following  in the footsteps of his grandfather Howard and uncle Timothy. Brain was working with a number of subdealers and home builders to grow the company’s residential market, as well as calling on a handful of architectural firms.    He began to focus primarily on commercial market in 2007, and has been lucky to work with some great designers and be a part of some great projects   Brian was named Vice President of Brick and Stone Sales in 2016.    With Thomas Brick getting involved in so many alternative cladding systems, the company recently decided to change his title to simply VP-Architectural Sales. 
  • Thomas Brick has been around since 1933, specializing in helping architects, developers, and builders realize their visions by offering the widest array of brick, stone, tile, ventilated rain screen facades and more!   They have two showrooms (Westlake and Beachwood) that will give designers options for any type of project!
