Day 1: Saturday October 28th, 2017

Saturday AM (9:00 am - 12:00 pm) with Dr. Annie Budhathoki, DAOM, LAc

“Integrative Oncology: Clinical and Research Perspectives for Acupuncturists"

Cancer-related fatigue, treatment-induced hot flashes, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy are a few of the common symtpoms frequently reported following cancer treatment. For many persons affected by cancer, these cancer-related treatment side-effects are overwhelming and difficult to treat medically. Evidence-informed practice has increased the use of complementary interventions in many cancer centers for cancer-related symtpom management. Integration of acupuncture in oncology and cancer care for symptom management has been gaining momentum in evidence-based practice and research. Based on current research, it is believed that acupuncture has the potential to provide improved quality of life for cancer-related fatigue, hot flashes, and peripheral neuropathy.

Learning objectives:

  • Determine if your acupuncture practice and research synthesizes with Integrative Oncology.
  • Examine clinical practices that allow you to collaborate within Integrative Oncology
  • Formulate opportunities that can empower your research and Integrative Oncology practice.
  • Appraise the value of Integrative Oncology practices for your own clinical practice in order to find areas of potential collaborative opportunities.
  • Understanding multiple perspectives of Integrative Oncology from a medical practitioner’s point of view.

Despite the millions consumers spend on calcium pills and the prescriptions for bone loss drugs they fill, worldwide there is an osteoporotic fracture every three seconds. Eating the right foods in the right nutrient combinations can help you build bone reserves before menopause, control bone loss after it, and arrest bone loss if not restore it at any time of life. Offering a natural, effective, and safe approach to conserving bone mass and building healthy bones and drawing on her knowledge of metabolic science and a rigorous examination of current research, this seminar will give you an in-depth look into bone health.

  • Understand the biology of bones - nutrition and endocrinology involved with basic bone metabolism - in order to treat age-related osteoporosis or traumatic bone injury.
  • Come away with a deeper understanding of treatment from an integrative perspective, using functional medicine in combination with TCM.

Sunday PM (1:30 pm - 4:30 pm) with Dr. Claudia Laufer, DAOM, LAc

"The Use of Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbs and Formulas in the Treatment of Hyperlipidemia."

Hypercholesterolemia is a wide-spread problem in today’s society, and the current western standard of care comes with side effects that prevent many patients from continuing treatment. Chinese herbal formulas and herbs have been used successfully in treatment of hyperlipidemia. This seminar will examine the effects of the most-prescribed formula and herbs for hyperlipidemia in Taiwan and China in terms of their effects on blood lipid levels, and will also examine their potential for regulating blood glucose levels and liver function, both of which are associated side effects of the standard of care for hyperlipidemia, and are comorbidities of hypercholesterolemia. It will also examine ways to construct custom formulas that address both TCM pattern differentiation as well as disease-specific symptoms and presentations, as well as give suggestions on how to further our understanding of symptom-less diseases through TCM pattern differentiation.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify current problems in the management of hyperlipidemia with Statin drugs, and the controversy surrounding the influence on blood cholesterol levels on heart disease.
  • Diagnose symptom-free diseases like hypercholesterolemia in TCM terms, including suggestions on how to set up databases to collect information regarding predominant patterns for these diseases
  • Understand how XFZYT as a whole formula as well as through individual functions of its herbs affects blood lipid and glucose levels as well as liver function.
  • Understand the role of Dan Shen, Shan Zha, Ge Gen, Ze Xie, and Da Huang in the management of blood lipid and glucose levels as well as liver health
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of studying whole herb formulas vs. single or multiple herb extracts, and the importance of the extraction methods to enhance certain functions.
  • Construct a formula that addresses both western biomedical markers as well as TCM patterns.
