Telling Therapeutic Stories in the Sandtray:
The Moving Stories Play Therapy Method
presented by

Susanne Carroll Duffy, Psy.D., Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor

Susanne Carroll Duffy, Psy.D., RPT-S is recognized as one of the leading play therapist in the North East.  Inspired and trained by some of the best in sandtray therapy, play therapy and bibliotherapy, Dr, Duffy integrated her skills to develop a new and original tool for the play therapist—The Moving Stories Play Therapy Method.  She is author of the first collection of therapeutic stories specifically designed to be told in the “theater” of the sandtray.  The stories include suggestions for each of the steps in her method.  Selected by Cathy Malchiodi and David Crenshaw to write a chapter in their upcoming book, “Creative Arts Therapy with Traumatized Children”, her original intermodal approach has also been recognized by Canadian play therapist and author, Liana Lowenstein and in both domestic and international publications. Dr. Duffy is one of the original members of the Maine Play Therapy Association and has served on the board and assisted throughout the years with articles, training, and conference planning. She initiated and manages a statewide play therapy training program (The Roundtable) in which the participants are also the presenters. This training model provides affordable, supportive and close to home play therapy training to remote parts of the state.  Dr. Duffy has spent most of her career working as a psychologist with the Passamaquoddy tribe at the Pleasant Point and Indian Township reservations. She works with Head Start, schools, and in outpatient services providing assessments, consultation, training and child and family therapy.  Known for her innovation, warmth, authentic and enthusiastic style, Dr. Duffy is a popular play therapy trainer, presenting domestically and internationally.  She is on the faculty for Sweetser and Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars and founded By The Sea Seminars.  In addition to providing intensive workshops on the Moving Stories Play Therapy Method, By The Sea Seaminars serves as a web-based home to the Moving Stories library.  The stories are delivered electronically. Students of the Moving Stories Play Therapy Method are invited to contribute to this growing collection of therapeutic stories for the sandtray.

This workshop will provide beginning and experienced therapists alike with a new way to integrate sandtray therapy, play therapy and bibliotherapy using the Moving Stories Play Therapy Method.  Therapeutic stories are told in the sandtray, using props such as you would use in sandtray therapy, a form of play therapy. The props for each story are kept in kits with identifying labels.  Together the kits make a colorful addition to the play therapy playroom—a three dimensional hands-on therapeutic story library which the child can return to session after session.  The specially designed playroom or “Wonder Room” is set-up in a way to encourage storytelling and for further exploration of the therapeutic theme in the child’s own creative way.  Play therapists will learn how to make, select and present their own stories in the sandtray, create a Wonder Room, and ways to be present and participate in the creative response of the child.  Play therapists will also learn ideas of how to reinforce the individual meaning of the story for the child at the end of the play therapy session and how to document sessions. Many stories and resources will be reviewed.  This approach can be adapted for use with individual children, groups, the classroom and families. Play therapists coming from both directive and nondirective theoretical orientations will find ways to use Moving Stories in their practice.
