Day 1:

Neurological and Developmental Considerations in Play Therapy (includes the Sandcastle Model)

Tantrums are difficult to manage in a two year old and they are difficult AND confusing when they occur in a nine year old. This training will explore various stages of development for children birth-12 years of age. We’ll use this information to explore what happens when this development is interrupted, and how to use play therapy to support children in "growing up" into the best versions of themselves.  Crystal has developed a Sandcastle Model to assist with understanding how trauma, mental illness, relationships and resiliency, all play a role in a childs development.  This model can also be used to educate others, set treatment goals and to design interventions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand various models of development and how these are used during play therapy
  • Learn basic neurology of emotional regulation and how to identify dysregulation during play therapy sessions.
  • Differentiate between a clients developmental and chronological age.
  • Learn about the Sandcastle Model to understand the impact of trauma, relationships, mental illness and resiliency on child development and in tailoring treatment to a clients needs.
  • Gain tools to assist caregivers to understand the play therapy process.

Day 2:

Stocking Your Play Therapy Toolbox

Participants will learn over 45 play-based interventions to address a wide range of symptoms and clinical issues, focused on topics such as feelings identification, coping and social skills.  Participants will also learn how to document play-based interventions and cash in on the "interactive complexity" CPT code.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how one's theoretical orientation influences their application of play-based intervention with clients.
  • Learn over 45 play-based interventions that address concerns frequently presented with children in therapy.
  • Explore ideas about how to adjust play-based interventions for individual, group and family sessions.
  • Learn how to translate play-based interventions with clinical documentation to accurately represent "interactive complexity" CPT code.
