The WISE NL - Statoil Speaker Series is a regularly scheduled event, open to the public and designed to tell the story of women’s contributions in science and engineering. The series features notable women who speak on science and engineering related topics and who complete the narrative with personal perspectives.
Tuesday January 28, 2014 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM NST
Carissa Brown, assistant professor at the Department of Geography, Memorial University, will provide an overview of her studies on boreal forest systems and discuss some of the unique aspects of her research. She will also step through her career path sharing experiences, personal stories and learning along the way.
About the Author
Dr. Carissa Brown is originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Superior and the heart of the boreal forest. Not surprisingly, her research background has emphasized boreal forest systems, particularly at the northern and southern edges of its distribution. She is interested in plant species and communities at the edge of their range, focusing on the direct and indirect effects of climate change on species' distributions. She also studies others phenomena
beyond direct climate effects that drive species’ distributions. Before becoming an assistant professor at Memorial University, Dr. Brown worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Université de Sherbrooke. She has earned her PhD from the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Brown is currently the leader of the MUN Biogeography Lab, which conducts research in arctic, boreal, and temperate ecosystems on topics related to biogeography, climate change, and disturbance.
