Can chemicals be green?

Dr. Fran Kerton, associate professor at the Department of Chemistry, Memorial University, will provide an overview of her studies in the relatively new field of Green Chemistry. She will also discuss the importance of mentors (from both sides of the partnership), teamwork, decision-making and risk-taking in scientific and technological careers.

About the Author

Fran Kerton first came to Canada in 1999 to perform postdoctoral research at the UBC before returning to her homeland to take up an independent academic post at the University of York. At that time, she became involved in Green Chemistry research including collaborations with Prof. James Clark (one of the pioneers in the field). In 2005, she moved back to Canada and is now an Associate Professor at Memorial University. In 2007 and 2013, she received Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund Awards for her research. In 2012, she was featured in the ‘Meet Our Authors’ section of the journal Green Chemistry and joined the editorial board of Sustainable Chemical Processes. In 2013, the RSC published the 2nd edition of her textbook “Alternative Solvents for Green Chemistry” and she received funding from the Hebron Diversity Research Fund for her studies into renewable chemicals. She currently leads a research team of ten graduate students trying to find new uses for waste materials such as carbon dioxide and shrimp shells.
