Technology for Teaching and Learning in Music Classrooms: Summer Institute 2017

This week-long institute offers a variety of workshops highlighting current technology tools to enhance teaching and learning. Throughout the week, select from various topics centered around technology in elementary, middle level, and high school. Topics include: assessment, digital audio recording, composition strategies with both notation and sequencing programs, video for music classrooms, assessment, and more. All tools and apps are low cost or free. Register now to probe new topics and develop projects for your teaching and student learning.

Each strand in the summer institute is designed as a hands-on learning experience supported by direct instruction, instructor coaching, and peer review and feedback. The entire group will come together for a one-hour session each afternoon that will focus on the new National Core Music Standards. Through the assigned readings and class discussion, participants will explore their own school curriculum and projects within the Summer Institute courses. Participants will identify where music and technology applications will enhance their respective curricula for Creating, Performing, and Responding as articulated in the NCAS document.

Technology for Teaching and Learning in Music Classrooms is available as a workshop only or three graduate credits in collaboration with Castleton University. Instructors are: Matt LaRocca, DMA and Jim Frankel, Ed. D. along with others.

Course number MUS 5710 CFS3 for three graduate credits.

Course Overview and Objectives:

Participants will:

Explore new technologies for music education to improve their own content knowledge and skills in this growing content area in music education.
Examine assessment and instruction through various cloud computing programs to utilize in their own classrooms.
Develop music and technology projects to use with students.
Become familiar with the new National Core Arts Standards and develop plans for implementation within their own curriculum.

This Music and Multimedia Technology Summer Institute is offered in collaboration with Castleton University and the Center for Schools.

Instructional Staff:

Matt LaRocca, DMA, is a composer, performer, conductor, and educator. He currently holds adjunct teaching positions at both Champlain College and St. Michael's College. Matt has been a professional composer mentor with Music-COMP for eleven years and now serves as Assistant Director. James Frankel, Ed. D, is the Head of Digital Education for the Music Sales Group, and Director of MusicFirst. Previously, he was the Managing Director of SoundTree, and before that he was the instrumental and general music teacher for 15 years in New Jersey Public Schools. Jim is a widely published author in various state, national and international journals of music education. He is the author of The Teachers Guide to Music, Media & Copyright Law, co-author of YouTube in Music Education, contributing author for Critical Issues in Music Education and co-author of Making Music with GarageBand & Mixcraft. In addition to his writing, Jim is a highly sought-after clinician and keynote speaker in the local, national and international music education community. He is on the Board of Directors for TI:ME and is the past president of ATMI.

Additional instructional staff will include local experts in standards and assessment, cloud computing, and more.

Fees: Deposit of $100 due June 1st for an early registration reward. Deduct deposit amount from full fee below. PO number will suffice for deposit.

Three credits are offered through Castleton University under a professional development contract with Music-COMP.

Accommodations:

Housing and meals are available at the facilities of Lyndon State College for an additional $229. Housing includes Sunday night through Thursday night. Meals begin with breakfast on Monday through lunch on Friday. There is no charge for parking. The Northeast Kingdom has multiple activities nearby.
