summer workshop image Music-COMP offers a week-long, half-day summer workshop for students with an interest in music composition. The instructor is Erik Nielsen, Senior Mentor with Music-COMP, with extensive experiences as a professional composer, student workshop leader, and school composition artist-in-residence instructor. Erik will guide each student as they explore various composition skills and techniques to develop works suitable for live performance. Students will interact with one another to provide feedback on each others' work. A goal of the week is a completed piece from each student that will be performed by the professional ensemble, The Northern Third Quartet. The concert will be scheduled for the fall or winter following the workshop. A full performance will be given with an audio recording made for each student composer

Students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development. Each student will grow from their starting point to develop increasingly sophisticated composition skills and techniques.

Tuition is $245 for the week and workshop size is very limited, so sign up early. You may pay in full, or pay a non-refundable deposit of $50 now with full payment due the first day of class.

Computer Use Fee: We are being charged a fee by the Montpelier school system to use their computers. The fee will total $30 total for the week. All students who don't bring their own laptop or tablet will have the $30 added to their tuition cost.

Recommended age group is middle through high school, although younger students with advanced skills may contact Erik to decide if this workshop is appropriate.
