Course Content

When people challenge us with actions or attitudes that feel unsafe, as caregivers our well meaning attempts to help can often fall into a cycle of frustration and power struggle resulting in a lose/lose outcome. To create a manageable framework in which to address these challenges, this interactive training will introduce participants to the brain chemistry underlying common challenges such as aggression, opposition, lying and stealing so they can be understood in context. Once viewed in the context of a survival skill, complicated issues and unsafe actions can be reframed as solvable challenges.  Participants will practice recognizing common problem solving barriers that often lead to power struggles and lose/lose outcomes. They will also explore how to use a Collaborative Problem Solving approach (CPS) to empathically work with others to address challenges and facilitate mutually satisfying solutions.

Objectives:

Upon completing this training participants will be able to:

1.  Describe and apply the core concepts of collaborative problem solving.

2.  Reframe challenges as solvable problems

3.  Identify and address differing perspectives or survival skills that result in impasses

4.  Work through problem solving barriers that result in power struggles to create win/win outcomes.

5.  Develop an empathic and collaborative approach to addressing challenges with those we serve, teams or family and friends.
