This course is open to occupational and physical therapists with an introductory to intermediate level of clinical experience with sensory integration and children with autism. It is recommended, but not required, that participants have taken a course on sensory integration theory and read Sensory Integration: Theory and Practice and Understanding the Nature of Sensory Integration in Diverse Populations.

Therapists must have their own professional liability insurance!

Contact hours: 30 hours (3.0 CEUs)

About the Instructor
Teresa A. May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA -  Dr. May-Benson is the Executive Director the Spiral Foundation at OTA-Koomar Center as well as a practicing occupational therapist.  She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention.  She has authored a number of book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis.

This unique five-day mentorship program is designed to help therapists further develop expertise in sensory integration assessment and intervention with children with autism. This course focuses on hands-on experience working with children using specialized therapy equipment. Therapists work in pairs, assessing and treating one child, for three days throughout the week. Each session includes ample time for in-depth discussion, clinical reasoning, analysis of interventions, self-reflection on performance, and feedback from our experienced clinician mentors.

As part of this program, participants will learn to apply sensory integration theory and treatment principles to practice. Participants will receive a comprehensive notebook of lecture handouts, evaluation tools, and intervention materials. This course will build your clinical skills by fostering self-reflection in clinical practice and promoting critical thinking in the application of sensory integration theory to intervention.

Daily lecture / discussion sessions and video presentations are geared towards participants' individual needs, and include topics such as developing the therapeutic relationship, facilitation of adaptive responses, clinical assessment of sensory modulation and discrimination, dyspraxia, development of a fidelity measure and goal attainment scaling for sensory integration research, and sensory integration for children with autism

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Use suspended equipment for sensory integration intervention safely and appropriately to maximize children’s adaptive responses.
  2. Administer clinical observations of sensory integration and complete a clinical assessment of sensory modulation and discrimination to assess children with autism for sensory integration problems.
  3. Develop a therapeutic relationship with children with autism to maximize the child’s sensory integration intervention.
  4. Provide sensory integration intervention under the mentorship of an experienced therapist.
