October Taste of Africa Cooking Classes

The STAR Center's popular Taste of Africa cooking classes continue!

October 2 and October 9, join STAR Center clients and chefs Olivia Laryea and Hasno Ali for more delicious dishes inspired by the foods of West and South Africa.

On October 2, Olivia Laryea, a refugee from Ghana and a successful caterer, will teach a morning and afternoon class. Her menu will include Ghanaian Chicken Pies, Jollof Rice with Vegetables, Fancy Fruit and West African Coconut Candy.

On October 9, Hasno Ali, a refugee from Somalia who sells her delicious food at San Diego farmers markets, will also teach a morning and afternoon class. Her dishes are inspired by her South African grandmother and will include Fish Stew with Plantains and Coconut Milk, Corn Meal Polenta and Fried Black-eyed Peas.

Taste of Africa cooking classes include printed recipes, generous samples of all foods prepared and light refreshments. Each class is limited to 14 participants and is held in the lovely demonstration kitchen at the Center for a Healthy Lifestyle in Solana Beach.

All proceeds benefit the WE STAR Center, a free service in City Heights that helps refugee women like Olivia and Hasno start businesses and become successful entrepreneurs. The STAR Center is a partnership between WE, a San Diego nonprofit that provides business loans and services to women in poverty locally and internationally,  and the International Rescue Committee.

Here's what Candice Woo, food blogger for San Diego Magazine, wrote about July's Taste of Africa classes: "Last weekend, I had the chance to attend a fantastic cooking class that also served as a fundraiser for a great organization, Women's Empowerment International."
