UM NIGHT WILL FEATURE

*  Extended Cocktail Hour beginning as 5:30

*  Guided Tours of the The Marine Technology & Life Sciences Seawater Complex. This facility, known as the The Alfred C. Glasswell, Jr. Surge-Structure Atmoshere Interaction Building. Guided tours will be offered during the happy hour

*  A great dinner provided by Sidewlak Salads
*  Presentation: BIGGEST COASTAL THREATS:
                                DEALING WITH HURRICANES AND SEA RISE LEVEL

*  Speaker: Nathan Laxague, Ph.D. Candidate
                                Dept. of Ocean Sciences

The "Glasswell Seawater Complex" is a science and engineering complex that focuses on two disciplines - Marine Biological and Biomedical Research and Hurricane Science. The marine biological and biomedical research is done in the Marine Life Sciences Center. The MLS Center is dedicated to the study of marine animals, focusing on the "the critical connections between oceans and human health and the impacts of the climate change on marine organism and ecosytems."

The Hurricane Science research facility's centerpiece is "SUSTAIN - SUrge-STructure-Atmosphere INteraction. SUSTAIN is a one-of-a-kind 38,000 gallon seawater wave tank that is a wind-wave-storm surge simulator capable of generating Category 5 hurricane force winds in a three-dimensional test environment.

As more prople move to and more buildings are constructed along our coastal areas, their vulnerability to hurricanes and, longer term, to sea level rise, increases. SUSTAIN simulates the loading of up to category 5 storm and wind on coastal structures. Through the use of SUSTAIN, we will be able to design and build safer structures that are more wind and water resistent, which will improve our coastal resiliency against storm surges and sea level rise.
