Guest Speaker: Barbara Melvin - SC Ports Authority

Barbara Melvin will be providing us with an update on the current activities of the Port as well as discussing what the future holds for Port activities in South Carolina.

As Senior Vice President, Operations and Terminals, Ms. Melvin oversees Terminal Operations, Information Technology and Support services, Crane and equipment maintenance, Engineering, Environmental, Port Police, Carrier Sales and Cruise Operations.


Prior to this role, Ms. Melvin was Senior Vice President, External Affairs. She was responsible for all aspects of communication with the public, including public relations, government relations, community giving, education and environmental programs. Ms. Melvin also served as the South Carolina Ports Authority’s lead staff person on the Charleston Harbor Post 45 Project and the Jasper Ocean Terminal Project.


Also within the Port, Ms. Melvin served as Vice President, Government Relations, responsible for lobbying local, state and federal public officials on the Authority’s behalf. Before joining the Port in 1998, she served as Director of Government Relations for the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and as a policy analyst for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget.


Ms. Melvin is a Riley Institute Diversity Leadership graduate; a member of the South Carolina Advisory Council of the United States Global Leadership Coalition; served as the Immediate Past Chair of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; Business Advocacy Committee of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce; the Ports Caucus Advisory Board for the United States Congress; and is also a Liberty Fellow. She is a member of the Board of Charleston Wine+Food Festival and a Community Advisor for the Junior League.  She formerly served on the board for Communities in Schools and the South Carolina Maritime Foundation.


Ms. Melvin was awarded the Charleston Women in International Trade (CWIT) 2014 Woman of the Year, The Propeller Club of Charleston and South East Region Maritime Person of the Year, the National Transportation Week Leader of the Year, and Columbia South Carolina’s 2014 Top Women of Influence Awards and Charleston Center for Women’s “Wrecking Ball” award in 2017. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia Southern University with a minor in international relations.

In his role as Development Manager, his efforts are focused mainly on multi million dollar  mixed-use projects located in the Greater Baltimore/Washington, D.C., Richmond , VA and Charleston ,SC. Mr. Olson has a Bachelor’s in Marketing and Management from Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. He currently resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife and two children.Mr. Olson joined Armada Hoffler Properties in 2013.
