Did you know, that the vast majority of human microbial infections are caused by biofilm-dwelling species?  Once a bacterial biofilm infection becomes established such as periodontitis and peri-implantitis, it becomes very difficult to eradicate.   Biofilms are highly resistant to antibiotic treatments and host immune system responses.  Due to the over use of antibiotics, multi-antibiotic resistance has  spread around the world.  In many cases, antibiotics can only reduce the biofilm but CANNOT eliminate it.  In fact, according to Rams, et al, J.Perio 2014, 74% of periodontitis patients and 72% of peri-implantitis patients, harbor pathogens resistant to at least one antibiotic.  Over time antibiotic resistance has continued to increase, which is why effectively combating biofilm is the KEY to sucessfully treating infections.  We will discuss current research and how peri-implant treatment strategies MUST CHANGE to be effective.  Dr. Gregory Farthing's presentation is entitled STRATEGIES FOR COMBATING PERI-IMPLANT BACTERIAL BIOFILM INFECTIONS:  Non-surgical Air Abrasive and Erbium YAG Laser Assisted Treatment of Peri-implantitis.

Learning Objectives:

  • What is biofilm?
  • What is it made of?
  • How does it form?
  • How does it participate in the pathogenesis of disease?
  • Why aren't antibiotics effective against bacteria in biofilm?
  • What treatment changes do we need to make in order to be effective against peri-implant biofilm infections?

Hands On Workshops (2 CE Credits)
Friday October 11 - 8:00 am & 10:30 am

HANDS-ON SESSIONS (for Doctors with one hygienist)
are scheduled Friday AM- October 11, 2019
at the Hilton Inverness Hotel and Conference Center

Hands-on Sessions: For the first time ever, doctors and one of their hygienists are invited to attend the Friday morning hands on programs.  There will be a brief presentation on how and why our non-surgical peri-implant treatments need to change to be effective against biofilm.  We will demonstrate, instruct, and allow hands-on participation with the subgingival air abrasive unit, the Piezon ultrasonic handpiece and the ErYAG laser for non-surgical implant debridement, decontamination and biofilm elimination.  Our peri-implant maintenance MUST CHANGE and include these therapies to be effective.  This hands-on program will show us how.
