WRITING TO READ: MACBETH
November 6th, 2012*
NYC PD Day
* In order to allow for voting, we will start later than usual (9:30 am) and end a bit later (4:00 pm).
This workshop explores approaches to teaching Shakespeare's Macbeth. Our focus is on developing questions that take full advantage of students' perspectives and the teacher's expertise in an effort to resolve a common dilemma of process-oriented teaching: that focusing on students' inquiries sometime seems to require that hte teachers point of view be eclipsed or erased. To consider this dilemma more closely, we study Macbeth, a canonical text that explores common issues of fate, justice, and humanity. Additional materials include filmed versions of the play. Participants will acquire new ways to teach the texts, as well as the experience, in the company of other committed readers and writers, of having worked on one of our culture's most charged question of meaning and metaphysics.
