TEACHING THE ACADEMIC PAPER
PART I
November 6th, 2012*
NYC PD Day
* so that teachers can both attend the workshops and vote, we will begin the workshops later than is usually the case (9:30 am) and run later than usual (ending at 4:00 pm)
Workshop Description
While we can all recognize good academic writing, it is more difficult to establish reasonable and responsible standards for students’ academic papers. This workshop helps to bridge that gap. Because teachers can learn from each other across disciplines, we especially invite secondary and college teachers from all academic fields to participate. The workshop redefines academic writing and shares ideas about what high school and college students need to learn. Part one of this two-part workshop will focus on setting goals for student writing and crafting effective essay assignments. Part two will focus on responding to student writing. Participants will be asked to read a brief essay that will be emailed to them before the workshop.
