You are invited to participate in a two-day monarch butterfly monitoring workshop. We will cover monarch butterfly biology and conservation status, citizen science opportunities, and monarch overwintering protocols.
Day 1: Participants will hear presentations about monarch butterfly biology and conservation status, and learn about numerous citizen science opportunities
Day 2: Participants will meet at the intersection of Azul Street and Poole Street (Azul Street overwintering site) and learn how to count monarchs in their clusters, conduct a habitat assessment, fill out data sheets, and survey an overwintering site. We will end with a picnic and informal group discussion
Workshop goals:
1) Provide an introduction to a variety of monarch butterfly citizen science programs in which people can participate, including Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, Project Monarch Health, and tagging monarchs through Monarch Alert
2) Train participants in standardized overwintering monarch counting and overwintering site habitat assessment protocol used by the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count
3) Enable participants to meet other people working to conserve monarchs in the San Diego area
4) Encourage collaboration among monarch butterfly enthusiasts and biologists for long-term monitoring efforts in California
Instructors:
Sarina Jepsen, Endangered Species Program Director, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation
Charis van der Heide, Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count regional coordinator for Santa Barbara County
Joanna Gilkeson, Public Affairs Specialist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Paige Howorth, Associate Curator of Invertebrates, San Diego Zoo
