Beegle Poverty Immersion Institute (July 11-12)
Dr. Donna M. Beegle – in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services – invite you to join us for an intensive in-person two-day Poverty Immersion Institute in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11-12, 2023. Dr. Beegle along with guest presenters (see bios below) will provide participants with a deeper understanding of poverty and what works to improve the lives of Louisiana’s children and adults.

About Dr. Donna M. Beegle
Most of the research and training on poverty are done by professionals who have never been evicted or hungry. Donna Beegle was born into generations of poverty. She dropped out of school at 15 to get married. She lived homeless most of her life and is the only member of her family who has not been incarcerated. At 15, she found herself divorced with two children, little education, and few marketable job skills. At age 26, she earned her GED. She went on to study poverty, communication, and education and--within 10 years of receiving her GED--she received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Dr. Beegle brings an insider's perspective of poverty as well as 34 years of research and work in all 50 states to break poverty barriers and to create inclusive, responsive environments that promote lifelong success.

Senator Lew Frederick
Oregon Senator Lew Frederick was tear gassed for the first time in Baton Rouge at age 8 while marching in a civil rights protest. He grew up next door to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He never forgot Dr. King telling him when he was a child that he "needed to leave America in a better place for the next generations." Dr. Shariff Abdullah
Dr. Shariff Abdullah grew up in generational poverty in Camden, New Jersey, and attended the poorest schools in the nation where he was told "he wasn't college material" when he was in middle school. Conversely to what the counselor advised him, he went on to achieve a law degree with honors from Boston University School of Law. Dr. Abdullah has been around the world 45 times and works daily to create systems and communities that work for all. Elia Hernandez-Moreno
Elia Hernandez-Moreno, author and speaker, is a master at assisting organizations and individuals who seek to implement fresh ways to connect with those living in poverty. Ms. Hernandez-Moreno will share her work from her books: "Living Intentionally" and "Permission To Rest."
