The Real School of Music invites you to an evening with the Tim Ray Trio on Friday, May 11th 7:30p-9:00p in the Real Room. 

Perhaps best known as the pianist for Lyle Lovett, Tim Ray’s wide-ranging skills as a soloist and accompanist have afforded him the opportunity to perform with legendary performers from all walks of music. Appearing on over 60 recordings to date, Tim has performed in concert with an extensive list of pop music icons, notably Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, Rickie Lee Jones, Willie Nelson, kd lang and Soul Asylum. He regularly performs with leading figures in the jazz world, among them Gary Burton, Scott Hamilton, Eddie Daniels, Esperanza Spalding, Dave Douglas, Lewis Nash and Rufus Reid, and his classical credits include solo performances and concerts with Gunther Schuller, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and the Boston Pops.

Tim’s busy schedule has included frequent tours throughout the Americas, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and has included performances at Carnegie Hall, the White House, the Kennedy Center and the 1992 Presidential Inauguration. Tim has also performed repeatedly on “The Tonight Show” (Johnny Carson, Jay Leno), “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Conan O’Brien Show,” “Austin City Limits” and various other national TV and radio broadcasts.

A sought-after arranger and composer, Tim has penned numerous original works for his chamber jazz trio Tre Corda, for solo piano, big band, string orchestra, and an extensive body of writing for jazz trio and quartet. He received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and is currently on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. Acoustic and electric bassist John Lockwood has toured the U.S. and Europe with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Gary Burton, the Mel Lewis Big Band, and The Fringe. He has also performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, MIT Symphony, Pat Metheny, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Eddie Harris, Johnny Hartman, Dave Liebman, Joe Pass, Danilo Perez, Pharoah Sanders, Clark Terry and Kenny Werner. He is currently on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music and other area colleges.

Drummer Austin McMahon performs weekly as a member of Jerry Bergonzi’s Quartet and has performed and/or recorded with George Garzone, Joe Lovano, Ben Monder and Grace Kelly. 

On tour, Austin has performed at Carnegie Hall, Earshot Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, Aspen Music Festival, Discover Jazz Festival, Cape Cod Jazz Festival, Bar Harbor Jazz Festival, Lake George Jazz Festival, Casa de Teatro Jazz Festival (Dominican Republic), Young Jazz in Town Festival (Foligno, Italy), and the Ballydehob International Jazz Festival (Cork, Ireland), as well as performing at jazz clubs, and recording and touring throughout the US, Italy, Germany, Finland, and France. 

McMahon is the winner of the 9th annual Independent Music Awards for Jazz Song Category. His debut CD Many Muses was selected as a CDBaby Editor’s pick and described as "subtle, reverential to tradition, and thoroughly new." He was recently featured on NPR JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater, WLRN Miami (NPR station) and live on WGBH radio, Boston, MA. 

Austin currently teaches in the Jazz Department at New England Conservatory Preparatory and Continuing Education Division, Boston, MA and has been a Teaching Assistant for Jazz Improvisation at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA for three consecutive years. He has given masterclasses at Harvard University, University of Miami, University of Mainz (Germany) as well as numerous colleges and high schools throughout the US.
