Spine Tingling Suspense: A Look at the Psychological Suspense Genre 

From Gone Girl to Girl on the Train, psychological suspense is one of today’s hottest genres. In this workshop, we will talk about the appeal of psychological suspense and how it is related and overlaps with other genres like thrillers, mysteries, and horror. We’ll introduce some of the top titles and authors both before and after Gone Girl. We’ll also touch upon booktalking when you don’t want to give away the twists and how to incorporate this genre into your book groups.

Presenters: 

Angie Strathman is a Readers’ Advisory Librarian at Woodneath Library Center, the newest branch of Mid-Continent Public Library, where she developed the opening day collection. She loves to read and talk about books almost as much as reading them, which led to her passion for readers’ advisory and helping other readers discover a new favorite book, author, or genre.  She has presented on various readers’ advisory topics at MLA and the Celebrate the Book! RA Conference.

Carmen Hannon-Patton is the Reader’s Services Librarian at Kansas City, Kansas Public Library. Carmen has worked in Academic, Special, and Public Libraries. In her current position she does collection development, programming, runs two book clubs, and general outreach. Her favorite part of working is talking to patrons about the books they have read and helping them decide what to read next. Outside of work, Carmen loves books of all sorts, but especially those that feature a love triangle, vampires, or magic.

Cassidy Rogers is the Branch Manager of the Smithville Branch of Mid-Continent Public Library. While she reads a variety of fiction, she particularly enjoys mysteries and anything that makes her scared to turn out the lights. Since most of her non-library friends are not big readers, she has made it her lifelong goal to personally track down the perfect book to change each of their minds, one by one. She is always up for a readers’ advisory challenge and loves browsing the stacks for those have-to-have-it-now customers.

We prefer all workshops to be prepaid or paid at the door.  If you prefer to be billed, please add $5.  Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date less a $5 administrative fee.  You can transfer to another workshop a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date with no administrative fee.  Cancellations made less than seven (7) days prior to the workshop date receive no refund or credit and you or your organization will be billed.  No shows are billed to you or your organization.
