Come join us for an all-day Adrenaline Fiction workshop with special guest, New York Times bestselling author, David Morrell. Mr. Morrell will be discussing the history of adrenaline fiction and how the sensation novels of the 1860s helped paved the way for the modern thriller. Other topics of the day will include a breakdown of adrenaline, the appeal factor of this multi-layered genre, new and notable books and authors, books-to-movies, and reliable review resources. Presenters:
David Morrell: is the critically author of First Blood, the novel in which Rambo was created. He holds a Ph. D. in American literature from Penn State and was a professor in the English department at the University of Iowa. His numerous New York Times bestsellers include the classic spy novel, The Brotherhood of the Rose (the basis for the only television mini-series to be broadcast after a Super Bowl). An Edgar and Anthony finalist, a Nero and Macavity winner, Morrell is a recipient of three Bram Stoker awards from the Horror Writers Association and the prestigious Thriller Master award from the International Thriller Writers organization. His writing book, The Successful Novelist: A Lifetime of Lessons about Writing and Publishing, discusses what he has learned in his more than four decades as an author. Lorie Hyten is the adult fiction selector for the Olathe Public Library. She’s a Kansas native and a graduate of the University of Kansas and the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science. In her former life she was a print and radio journalist in Kansas and Iowa for 17 years. When not seeking a fix through Adrenaline fiction she spends time with her pup Maddie and horse River. She’s actually a fan of all kinds of fiction, but especially mysteries, suspense and thrillers. With a little horror thrown in.
Ralph Tomlinson an adult services librarian at Olathe Public Library, manages the DVD and music collection for the library, in addition to selecting biography and history titles. Prior to earning his library degree at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Tomlinson worked as an editor and a journalist. He grew up in Independence, MO, and has lived in Austin, TX, and Washington, DC. He enjoys movies and music, in addition to reading about politics and savoring an occasional good novel.
Jessica Zellers is a Collection Development Librarian with Mid-Continent Public Library. She has written for NoveList for the past ten years, and currently writes the “Around the Web” column for RA News. Her secret weakness is fat Russian novels.
Angie Strathman is a Readers’ Advisory Librarian at Woodneath Library Center, the newest branch of Mid-Continent Public Library, where she developed the opening day collection. She loves to read and talk about books almost as much as reading them, which led to her passion for readers’ advisory and helping other readers discover a new favorite book, author, or genre. She has presented on various readers’ advisory topics at MLA and the Celebrate the Book! RA Conference.

We prefer all workshops to be prepaid or paid at the door. If you prefer to be billed, please add $5. Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date less a $5 administrative fee. You can transfer to another workshop a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date with no administrative fee. Cancellations made less than seven (7) days prior to the workshop date receive no refund or credit and you or your organization will be billed. No shows are billed to you or your organization.
