This annual workshop focuses on a variety of professional and practical topics for librarians and paraprofessionals working with young adults.

Agenda:

9:00-10:00         Keynote Panel: Get questions answered on everything you ever wanted to know about gathering data, using outcomes-based measurements, and making evaluations to advocate for, inform, and guide what we do for teens. Panelists include Katina Jones, Tahir Atwater, and Will Stuck

10:00-10:15       Break

10:15-11:15       Breakout Session: Katina Jones will be following up her comments as part of the keynote panel with a more in-depth presentation on using outcomes-based measurements, demographics, and other data to help inform and guide what we do for teens.

Breakout Session: Meredith Nelson will be presenting on the Johnson County Library's Mobile Maker Spaces and how to embrace and adapt the maker movement to all ages, venues, and budgets.

11:15-12:00       Hammer + Ice: a fun, interactive session with the members of the workshop committee that will leave participants with lots of ideas for getting teens comfortable during formal or informal programs

 12:00-1:00         Lunch

1:00-2:00            Dare to Share: A Field Guide for Teen Programming: All participants are encouraged to share a program idea (or several) in advance using our Google form  http://goo.gl/forms/3H3zbavE4K and then bring a copy of their ideas to share in person during this speed dating-style session. Programs entered into the Google form will be accessible forever after.

2:00-2:15            Break

2:15-3:00           Teens in Translation: Compete with a team of fellow participants in this Jeopardy-style trivia session that'll have you racking your brains to make sense of everything our teens are obsessed with these days. Video and audio clips as well as standard trivia clues will all be part of this challenge to keep up-to-date with pop culture.

3:00-4:00           Have You Met This Book?: Committee members will demonstrate their personal, on-the-spot, book-talking styles with a variety of books, prompting participants to identify the book and claim rewards for their knowledge! A complete hand-out with titles, authors, and descriptions will be provided.

Presenters:

Lesley Lard is a new mom, an ice cream lover, and a little obsessed with her best friend (and dog) Gingy.  She has been in teen services for several years at different libraries, and is currently the Youth and Teen Services Librarian at Bonner Springs City Library.

Dennis Ross is Central Resource Library Youth Services Supervisor at Johnson County Library.  His beard turned white, but he never really grew up.

Rachel Miller is the Youth Services Supervisor at the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library - South Branch. Rachel is awesome at teen services and terrible at writing bios.

Amanda Barnhart wrestles with craft guns, quests for teen friendly activities, and frisks young adult literature for popularity, all in the name of library teen services. She is the young adult associate at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library, Trails West branch.

Linda Bowman is the YA Associate at West Wyandotte Library for KCKPL. There is nothing she loves better than crafty chaos and creative explosions. When she gets to combine those things with teens, she is firmly in her happy place.

Erin Davies thinks she should run the world, but her teens won’t give her permission, so she makes do with running her teens’ world at Mid-Continent Public Library’s Woodneath Library Center.

Jenny Cox is an ambassador from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who spends her days studying teen Muggles at Mid-Continent Public Library’s Boardwalk Branch.

Will Stuck has worked in the public library setting for more than two decades. The last sixteen of those years have been spent working in Children's Services. This job allows him to get paid for doing things like getting tattooed, having LOTR marathons, building and demolishing entire cities, and earning great notoriety amidst a very select demographic.

Tahir Atwater was born and raised in Kansas City, MO and after a career in corporate America found his way to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Tahir began as a case manager creating and supporting new matches and is now a full time recruiter, tasked with finding new "Bigs" for the 400+ "Littles" on the BBBS waiting list. He also co-chairs the BBBS Diversity Task Force. Tahir has been a Big Brother since 2004 and was recently joined by his wife, Beth as part of a Big Couple to their little brother Jalen. He also mentors another "Little", Martino, who just finished his Freshman year at KU. Tahir, being an MU grad is currently trying to indoctrinate both of his little brothers and convince them to attend MU as well.

Meredith Nelson has been a Reference Librarian at Johnson County Library since December, 2011.  She opened the Maker Space in March, 2013.

Katina Jones  is the Statistical Research Analyst at Mid-Continent Public Library. She works with Library staff at its 35 locations to gather, analyze, and make data-driven decisions based the district’s service statistics. Prior to MCPL, she was the Statistical Research Analyst at the Missouri State Library. In that position, Ms. Jones worked with the Institute of Museum and Library Services to collect and distribute library statistics for the state and with the Census Bureau as the coordinator of the Missouri State Data Center. Her passion for survey research started early in life while helping her father with the family decennial census forms at the age of 8.  Ms. Jones received her bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology and Broad Field Social Science from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
