2016 Summit-Stark-Portage MG Diagnostic Update 

It’s time to hone your diagnostic skills, as we prepare for the 2016 gardening season.  Please join Summit, Stark, and Portage MGVs as we refresh our diagnostic skills and receive updates on insect and disease challenges we will face in 2016.  Take advantage of this opportunity to prepare yourself for questions on the hotline, at farmers market, community gardens, and other MGV venues.   Polish those hand lenses, and be prepared for an educational and enjoyable day.

 Your $15 registration fee includes lunch and materials.  

This program qualifies for 5 CEUs!

Presenters:

Denise Ellsworth  (Dir OSU Honey Bee & Native Pollinator Program)  will be presenting on the the Diagnostic Process.

 Denise is the Program Director, Honeybee and Native Pollinator Education Ohio State Department of Entomology. She directs the honey bee and native pollinator education program through the Ohio State University Department of Entomology on the Wooster campus.  In this outreach position, Denise supports and teaches beekeepers, farmers, and gardeners through a variety of workshops, webinars, written materials and electronic resources.  She is also the past OSU Extension Educator for 17 years, and has trained many of the Summit County Master Gardeners during that period.  She has been an educator in many areas of entomology and horticulture, including plant pests, integrated pest management, plant identification, and botany.

 

Francesca Peduto Hand (OSU Dept of Pathology) will be doing our Disease Update.

 Francesca is Assistant Professor, Ornamental/Turf Pathology, The Ohio State University. Francesca earned her  M.S. in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies and her Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, from the Università degli Studi di Firenze (University of Florence, Italy.)  Francesca's research interests include the detection, characterization, and management of pathogens associated with ornamental crops (greenhouse, nursery/landscape) and turfgrass.  The purpose of her program is to develop plant health management strategies to address the disease problems faced by the floriculture, nursery and turf industries of Ohio.  

 

Curtis Young (OSU Dept of Entomology and Biology)  will be doing our  Pest Update.

Curtis is currently an Agriculture and Natural Resources (Ag&NR) Extension Educator and Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in agronomic crops and landscapes.  Curtis started his career in 1992 in the NW District Office of the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service as an Ohio State University IPM Extension Associate in agronomic crops.  In 2003, Curtis was hired in Allen County.  In 2010, he moved to the Miami County Office and in 2011, he moved to the Van Wert County Office where he is currently as the Ag&NR Extension Educator and County Director.  Curtis is the lead editor of the Buckeye Yard and Garden Line (BYGL) .

Registrations due by March 1st.  After March 1st remaining space will be offered to NE Ohio MGVs.

MGs should wear their name tag and bring their beverage cup.
